I have been with HostGator for over a year now and have decided it is about time that I posted a review on their reseller services.

I do not work for HostGator, I am just your average jo blogs sharing the experience I have had with them.

Where it all started for me

A few years back I began developing my own websites and hosting them with shared web hosting plans. This worked alright for some time, but I was never really satisfied with the quality and speed of the service. Pages would load, but not with the speed I was looking for. After doing some online research I found that web hosting companies tend to over sell their shared hosting services and place large number of clients onto one system. This quite easily leads to slower services especially when some clients abuse the service.

It was then that I discovered reseller hosting. I was not looking for to start up a web host business at this stage, I simply wanted faster and more reliable hosting services. HostGator’s $24.95 / month deal took me by surprise at first. I asked the question: “How can reseller hosting be so cheap?”. After reading a couple reviews by other people I discovered that people had very positive things to say about HostGators hosting services. I decided it was time to make the switch from shared hosting to the more flexible, reliable and expandable (or so people had been saying) reseller hosting.

Features

HostGator has a range of reseller plans to suit most people’s needs. I started off on the Aluminium plan as I only had a couple of websites that I wished to be hosted. This has lasted me well and I have not had to upgrade to a larger plan yet.

My experiences

Positive:

The HostGator’s live support feature is truly superb. All you have to do is click the live chat button, type you name, and within a minute a representative is there to help you out. The technicians know their stuff and if they don’t they have a support level process which gets you someone who does in no time. They have a large online support database too so it is likely that your problem has been solved before and can be easily solved that way.

WebHost manager makes it very easy to setup and manage websites on your account. This was my first time using WHM and it only took less than an hour before I had set up the websites I needed and configured the hosting plans. WHM allows you to create a cpanel account for each new user / domain name which I particularly liked. No more sharing cpanels for multiple domain names (that got confusing!).
Hostgator keeps you informed when they are making changes to the web servers, so you know exactly what updates are being installed and when certain issues are resolved. The other month actually a host gator newsletter gave all resellers a free e-book of getting your first 1000 thousand hosting clients. That was a good read!
You can pay monthly which is good for those who wish to try the service out a bit rather than investing the full years hosting payment which most web hosts seem to demand these days.

I have not had any issues with reliability of their servers and my hosted websites always run quickly.

Negative:

Well there is not much to mention here!

One thing I did encounter however is that HostGator will not backup your accounts if you have over a certain (very large) number of files on that account. This happened to me once but with the help of a support representative I soon reduced the number of files to the allowed amount.

A website of mine was hacked at one stage and although the support staff did very well at cleaning malicious files from the account, they did not do much in the sense of offering to help prevent future attacks.
